Build Quality,
The build is surprisingly good, I was worried about the fact it’s mostly plastic but I’m actually really grateful. It’s much lighter than my old Desire Z (which doubled as a paperweight) and also incredibly thin. The curved screen is not very noticeable but just exudes awesomeness when you have it casually laying on a table. I really like that the front has very few features when the screen is off, and looks very understated. A lot of my friends have complemented me on it! My biggest issue with the phone is that the screen is huge and really difficult to operate one-handed unless you have big hands (I don’t). There’s a lot of hand-shuffling from the top to the bottom, or using two hands.

Galaxy Nexus 16GB Sim Free Smartphone

Screen,
The screen is really nice. I have had no issues with the auto-dimming feature other people have found, it works great. The screen is pin-sharp and colours are simply excellent. My issue is that, despite lots of people saying you cannot notice the “Pentile” type display, you can. I’ve found it particularly noticeable on thin cyan lines (such as when typing a message in Messaging); it’s not a big issue but is a bit of a shame because otherwise the screen is spectacular.

OS,
ICS is really cool and a huge leap in terms of visuals for Android. I really, really like it and I also love having pure Android on it, which makes it easier for me as a developer too. The UI is understated and sleek, and much better than HTC Sense and TouchWiz, which are starting to look really stale. I like having the multi-tasking button there (although I’d love to be able to “pin” apps here), but I really would’ve liked a search button too. Google has once again really pulled it out of the bag with their apps, which are simply fantastic, although 3rd party apps are *still* lightyears behind (I’m looking at you, Facebook). Contact sync with Facebook is currently broken, which is annoying but not a huge issue.

Performance/Stability,
I’ve had very few issues with performance. Occasionally, the launcher will trip up and lag a bit, but not very often. Saying that, using a live wallpaper tends to really kill the device and I wouldn’t recommend one. I’ve had a couple of app freezes and total lockups, but nothing major and it’s stability is a huge leap from Honeycomb. The browser in particular hasn’t crashed once.

Galaxy Nexus 16GB Sim Free Smartphone

SETUP,
I’ve upgraded from another Android phone (the HTC/Google Nexus). All I needed to do was take the SIM out of the old phone, snap the back off the Galaxy Nexus, install the SIM and battery and refit the back cover (a little bit fiddly on first attempt).
Then I plugged it in using the supplied plug adaptor and micro-USB connector and powered it up. After entering wifi network details and the username and password for my Google Apps account, the phone was ready to use.
It immediately began installing the various apps that I had set to AutoUpdate on the old phone and, after a few minutes of that, it told me that there was a firmware update. This took about 3 mins to perform, including a reboot of the phone.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The screen is gorgeous – large, vibrant, and really easy to read. It’s much larger than the Nexus One, but it’s lighter too. The phone is much faster than my old Google Nexus – apps spring open, and flipping screens / navigating menus is near instantaneous.
One niggle is that the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android works differently to the previous versions. The app tray is swiped sideways rather than up/down – muscle memory/force of habit means that I’ve found myself performing the old gestures in this first hour or so. I guess that will fade pretty quickly.
I’ve taken some stills and video. Both are straightforward to perform, and the picture quality seems good (need to check it on a PC screen) but I seem to have put my finger over the microphone a few times while filming – need to work out the best way to hold it to avoid this in future. I have uploaded some photos to the product page. You can find them under the main product image.
The Gmail app is much nicer than on my old phone. Clearer, faster to use, and the menu options seem to be in a better place than the previous one. Calendar seems to have synched up correctly too, with multiple calendars from my Google apps account showing.

UPDATE: About 2 hours in
I tried out the Portable WiFi Hotspot. It works perfectly – managed to get my iPad 2 connected and accessing the outside world. Also, I’ve got an integrated Bluetooth hands free system in my car and the Nexus paired perfectly with it.

‘Contacts’ seems to have been replaced by a ‘People’ app that pulls together contact info from Gmail, Google+, Twitter & WhatsApp and attempts to consolidate each person’s Connections under their contact info. It’s possible to tweak this so that you don’t end up with everyone you follow in Twitter clogging up your contacts. Noticeably, it doesn’t offer to integrate information from your Facebook friends. I’m not sure how useful this is, or indeed if I am correctly understanding what info it is pulling together, but I can see a real danger of your genuine contacts being swamped by the profiles of online acquaintances. Consequently, I’ve chosen not to view any of my Twitter contacts in the People app.

The auto dimming screen brightness seems too low to me – I’ll have to poke around to see if I can tweak it.

Call me a Siri Iriot, but I thought I’d try using the microphone icon to tell the phone to ‘Call XXX YYY at home’ and the speech recognition worked very quickly to find the correct contact details. If you want to no more Click on the Image.

I made a call and the quality was perfect. No volume problems. If you have a picture associated with a contact then it takes up the whole screen background when you’re talking. The in=call options (keypad, loudspeaker, hold..) appear at the foot of the screen. Galaxy Nexus 16GB Sim Free Smartphone

UPDATE: 6 hours in.
I noticed that some of my photos and videos were crystal clear in the background, but not on the subject. The trick is to tap the screen over the item you want to be in focus. [Correction: tapping the screen focuses on a subject in camera mode. Doing the same in camcorder mode captures a still whilst the video is still being recorded. ]

Seek time for autofocus in low light is slow.

UPDATE: 3 days in.
I’ve got used to the different gestures in Android 4, which is great.
Tinkering around in the settings I found one that disconnects the WiFi connection when the phone is not being actively used – I’ve selected that as I think it might extend battery life.
Speaking of which, with normal use (more data access than calls for me) the phone has been running for 20h 14m since the last charge and is still showing 34% battery.

UPDATE: 5 days in
Generally I am delighted with the phone but there are some more niggles that are worth knowing about.
1. The phone has crashed twice and frozen once. The crashes were while opening a contact and while using the Facebook app. The freeze was when opening the app tray. I’m not so worried as I’m sure subsequent updates to the FB app and/or system updates will address such instability.
2. [This now fixed, as Flash for ICS is available from Android Market] There is no Flash support as Adobe has yet to compile a version for Android 4. This means that apps like BBC iPlayer, that depend on Flash, don’t work. This is frustrating, but Adobe & Google recently announced that Flash and Adobe Air support will be rolled out soon.
3. Some apps are not yet Android 4 compatible. Again – this is something that should be addressed by publishers of popular apps.

Galaxy Nexus 16GB Sim Free Smartphone

Overall, I think this phone is a great one to get if you’re looking to get updates as soon as they come. I have a feeling that this phone will be very quickly overtaken spec-wise by HTC and even Samsung themselves, but for now, this is the best phone you can buy. Galaxy Nexus 16GB Sim Free Smartphone

Where can a girl find some decent AND cheap band tee shirts?

Jeez, talk about not giving a girl a break! I checked out my local Hot Topic, which only had girls fashion tees, not band tees. So I figured that I’d try on the guys sirts in a small, which was too big, and then the childrens sizes…needless to say, I didn’t find anything. I also checked out Rockabila.com, which doesn’t really have anything that I’m looking for in girl’s sizes. Back to Hot Topic, online that is, the tees that I wanted weren’t in stock in my size.

So, does anyone know where to get some good and cheap [under $20] band tees?

Is Pink Floyd’s music for fragile people, who feel stressed, unhappy & wanna get high: in other words, for wimps?

It’s music for the depressed, to get them even more depressed. PF fans misconstrue this as being into “deep/spiritual” music; unfortunately, there is no spirituality in cash registers, dogs barking, helicopter sounds, classroom children or depressing lyrics or sounds etc. PF is not happy/optimistic man’s music, they don’t even know how to rock out. Look at Syd Barrett, its the same with PF’s music. It’s not a cure for depression, its an aggravator. People used to think LSD (in the counterculture era of the ’60′s) made them spiritual, same thing with PF’s music. Paranoid hippies trying to decipher everything in the world rather than looking at their sorry selves.

I hate today’s music, I love Led Zeppelin because they did not make music for wimps or fragile people. And about the bands themselves, look at how the other members left Syd Barrett hanging and exploited his condition to keep themselves afloat (“Wish you were here”, “Shine on you crazy diamond”). Don’t tell me they really cared about him, Syd’s family hated them all. And look at how they kicked Roger out of the band later, they weren’t even friends. They were cheap media whores; who used their DSOTM t-shirts, “Wall” the movie, lasers, animal/helicopter sounds, cash registers etc to compensate for their lack of talent. They had no real integrity. When John Bonham died, Led Zeppelin did not do any tours in respect of him. Now THAT’S integrity. They weren’t media sell-outs, they actually didn’t want all the commercial spotlight, never made a movie about themselves or sold t-shirts.

The box it comes in appears quite small – smaller than the box for my previous phone – But take the lid off the box and the sight that greets you is a huge phone, almost as though the box has some Tardis like properties. I had never seen the phone in the flesh before purchase, but had seen videos on YouTube, but still I was a little taken aback. Now I’ve had it a few days I’m already used to it and far more comfortable about it.

I make and receive very few mobile calls, so for me the beauty of this device is to have a “tablet” that fits in my pocket (easily!) and still allows me the occasional text or call when necessary without needing a second device. I don’t expect to wandering around shouting into it and drawing attention like Dom Jolly. Due to the size I did wonder for a short while if I had made a mistake and perhaps the Galaxy S2 would have been a wiser choice, but now I am happy with my decision.

The screen is glorious. Some people moan about the pentile display, but I have absolutely no issues with the screen. Performance wise I’ve only found one annoyance, which is a distinct delay when waking the phone before the lock screen is displayed. Other than that it’s worked beautifully and has shown a massively clean pair of heels to my poor little San Francisco.

The biggest negative so far is that the huge screen size makes it impractical (impossible) to operate the phone single handed. It needs one hand to hold it and another to dab away at the screen. Definitely not the end of the world for me, but maybe an issue for some people. I’m also not a fan of the button placement for power and volume. They are on opposite sides of the phone and I find that when seeking for one I end up squeezing the phone and pressing the buttons on the other side too. I don’t understand why the power button is not at the top. It has been on every other phone I’ve owned. You do have to wonder whether the people who design these things ever actually use them. Anyway, that’s just something I will have to get used to and deal with. It’s already becoming less of an issue now that I’m getting used to the form factor.

As far as pocketability goes I wear cargo pants and have voluminous pockets, so no drama there. I’ve had it pocketed while walking the dog and it’s no bother at all. It will slip into a shirt pocket too, but is too tall to be fully concealed and looks a bit daft with the camera lens visible above the top of the pocket. As supplied I find the phone to be a little on the slippery side and combined with the size and weight I have felt on times that the thing might well slip from my grasp if I’m not paying attention. The solution, I think, will be a gel case. I don’t want the official flip cover or anything along those lines. I’ve always gone bareback with my phones and PDAs and never had a problem with damage. The only reason I want a gel case for this is to make it a bit more grippy, although I won’t object to a little extra protection.

All in all I love this phone and I’m happy with my purchase. The device gets 5 stars.

Build Quality – Samsung does use a lot of plastic in their phones so this does not feel like a really premium product. However the build quality is very good and the phone is ludicrously light for it’s size and also stupidly thin!. An iphone 4 feels like a dense brick by comparison. The overall fit and finish is excellent. The back cover is made from a very thin plastic and looks like it could easily snap in half but in fact it is very flexible and can be folded in two with no sign of breaking(it’s on You Tube). Don’t try this at home though!

Screen – This is the largest screen on any phone to date at 5.3 inches and I find it fantastic. It uses Super Amoled HD at a 1200 by 800 resolution and the colours are extremely vibrant and super saturated. Although not quite the same pixel density as the Retina Display on an iPhone it blows it away in terms of brightness and colour. Off axis viewing angles are very good indeed though I do note a slightly greenish tinge which is due to the pentile display matrix. You will never use the phone this way however so its not an issue for me but it is there. Movies look amazing as do pictures. This is probably the best display on any phone at the moment.

Size – The most common criticism of the Note is that it is too big and that you have to have massive hands to use one. I find this to be totally untrue. I have average sized hands for a man and it’s quite easy to use and comfortable to hold, even for long periods. My wife, who has much smaller hands than me also does not find it a problem. The other issue sited is that you will look stupid when using it as a phone, again totally untrue. I’ve used it out and about, the street, restaurants, pubs. No one has ever given me a second look. Not that I would care anyway.

Speed – This is without a doubt the fastest phone I’ve ever used. It has a 1.4Ghz dual core processor and 1GB of ram. To put this into perspective if you go back about 5 years this would have been a respectable spec for a desktop PC running Windows XP. This power is now in the palm of your hand which is amazing. Currently this is the fastest phone on the planet.

Phone calls – As a phone I would rate the Note as average, it’s no better or worse than my iPhone 4. To be honest I rarely use it as a phone so this is not that important for me.

Battery Life – With a massive bright screen and dual core processor I thought that the Note would struggle to make it through a day. How wrong I was! It has a 2500mAh battery which lasts a day with heavy use and over 2 days with light use. I do charge the phone every day but most evenings it still has about 30% charge left unlike my iPhone4 which would either be dead of dying at the same point. For a smartphone this is a great battery life.

Camera – 8MP shooter that can do 1080p video as well. Not quite as good as the camera on an iPhone4S but still takes extremely sharp and vivid photographs.

S Pen – Samsung calls the stylus that comes with the phone an S Pen. It works very well but I don’t use it much as I’m not very artistic. My friend who is very able loved it however and drew some very good pictures in a few minutes. It is useful for taking notes and I have used it for that. Nice to have but not that important to me.

User Interface – I have to say that after years of using IOS I have found Android to a revelation in terms of flexibility and control. I love the widgets and the fully customisable interface. I have to say it, the iPhone just looks dated and stilted in comparison with its rows of icons. Even better news is that the Note will be updated to the latest version of Android in the spring of 2012. Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 uses its propitiatory Touch Wiz interface which I like well enough.

Android Market – It’s true to say that the Android Market does lag behind Apples App Store in terms of selection and quality. However the gap is closing quite rapidly and most of the apps you really want or need are there, many for free.

Storage – Although not officially supported this phone works with a 64GB micro SD card which I have installed giving me a total of 80GB storage. All my music and films go on the SD card and I can load up days worth of entertainment. I love the fact that I can plug the phone into my PC and just dump files onto the SD card which the phone will recognise and categorise for me. No conversion required, and joy of joys, no iTunes! This for me is the biggest plus, I can put whatever content I want on the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 with no hassle.

For me the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 is the perfect device, it does all that I want very well and is also a unique and beautiful product. I love it!
